What to Do & Where to Go
Saraswati Temple
Waters from the temple at the rear of this site feed the pond in the front, which overflows with pretty lotus blossoms. There are carvings that honor Dewi Saraswati, the goddess of wisdom and the arts, who has clearly given her blessing to Ubud. Regular traditional dance performances are staged here by night, tickets for which are sold at the entrance for 100.000 IDR ($7).
Ubud Art Market
Balinese people are famous for their passion for art and craftsmanship with thousands of talented artisans. The vast majority of goods found at the Ubud Market are made by such artisans in the neighbouring villages of Pengosekan, Tegallalang, Payangan, and Peliatan. This is a great place to shop for some souvenirs, but keep in mind that bargaining is essential.
Monkey Forest Ubud
This cool and dense swath of jungle is inhabited by a band of over 1000
grey-haired and greedy long-tailed Balinese macaques who are nothing like the innocent-looking, cute monkeys on the brochures. Thus, here are some tips for your monkey encounters: don't stare male alphas in the eyes, don't smile or show them teeth as they see it as aggressive, don't try feeding them without a guide, don't carry plastic bottles or something that they can easily grab from you. The forest also has some beautiful statues and temples making it a great location for your photos. 80.000 IDR ($5.7)
Campuhan Ridge Walk
Best hiking trail in the centre of Ubud filled with greenery and hills. A beautiful jungle exploration for the beginning of your day that has several photo-worthy angles. Try to start at sunrise around 6-7 am to avoid the crowds and getting sunburned. After you will walk for 1 km through the trail, you will find some art shops, cafes, massage places, etc. where it's nice to have a break.
Tegalalang Rice Terraces
Beautiful scenes of rice paddies and their innovative irrigation system offer a scenic outlook that spreads down before you and away to the far side of the valley. The high roadside location is cool and breezy and it's a well-known spot for tourists to stop and take photos. Painters and nature lovers also enjoy visiting this spot, and there are numerous art kiosks and cafes near the ledge. Entrance fee is something around
$1-2, but then you will be asked for donations by locals several times throughout your walk in the rice fields, so prepare a bunch of smaller rupiah bills.
Bali Safari
Are you an animal lover or do you have kids? This park is representing more than 100 species, including rare & endangered species like the Komada Dragon, Orangutan and the Bali Starling bird. Bali Safari Park is at the frontline of wildlife conservation in Indonesia, ensuring the future survival and wellbeing of many Indonesian animal species. Best animal encounters, emotions and photos guaranteed. 560.000 IDR ($40)
Rafting
The best water park in Asia by TripAdvisor's Travelers' Choice with rides for all ages, international safety standards, delicious restaurants, and a swim-up bar. Definitely a fun and enjoyable experience for the whole day if you are a thrill seeker who wants to try out Asia's steepest slide or a family with kids. 700.000 IDR ($50)
Tibumana
Short and wide stream of water makes it popular for wedding ceremonies and photoshoots. In general, waterfalls near Ubud can be a great beginning of your waterfall exploration journey. All of them are smaller in comparison to the big ones in the North, yet they are beautiful and it is much easier to walk down to them. 20.000 ($1.4)
Tegenungan
Great infrastructure for touristic visits with cafes, swings, photo nests and many good angles to take a picture. Visiting two waterfall near Ubud is enough and I'd suggest to combine either Tibumana + Kanta Lampo or Tegenungan + Kanta Lampo. Check them out, capture great photos, and dive for a refreshing swim. 20.000 ($1.4)
Kanta Lampo
The most unique looking waterfall with water cascading to all sides over the rocks (it's a bit slippery and you will have to stand in the water waist-deep to take a photo, so be careful and don't wet your camera). Photo tip to get a silky cascading water effect on iPhone: shoot with live mode on and then swipe up on the taken photo and choose long exposure effect. 20.000 ($1.4)
Pura Tirta Empul
50.000 IDR ($3.5)
Over a thousand years, Balinese Hindu worshipers have been drawn to this Holy Water Temple, whose sacred springs are said to have been created by The God Indra and possess curative properties. This tradition still continues almost unchanged, and today, aside from worshipers, tourists from all over the world also come to this place to marvel at its beauty, bathe in its refreshing blessed water and experience a purification ritual. Sarongs are provided at the entrance. Optional locker and bathing ritual 35.000 I DR ($2.5).
Sound Healing at the Pyramids
of Chi
210.000 IDR ($15)
A great experience for spiritual seekers or people who simply want to let go of anxiety and stress and find an inner peace. The medicine of the future will be music and sound. For centuries the ethereal and emotive vibrations created from Gongs, Drums, and Didgeridoos have helped countless cultures to achieve many states of mind, health and spirit.
